Since 2009 The Box and The Arts Institute at University of Plymouth have worked together to deliver major city-wide exhibitions, projects and festivals and helped found strategic agencies such as Plymouth Visual Arts Consortium and Visual Arts Plymouth. Working together, The Box and The Arts Institute offer a joint programme of cultural activity that champions artistic development, bringing national and international artists to the city, and supporting talent development with the aim of inspiring diverse audiences and communities.
In collaboration with The Box for its opening programme, the Levinsky Gallery at The Arts Institute hosted a solo exhibition by Kehinde Wiley to mark The Box's acquisition of the artist's first ever video work Narrenschiff (Ship of Fools). The work joined The Box collection in 2018 thanks to the Contemporary Art Society's Collections Fund at Frieze.
