Meet the artist: Honorata Martin

The Box's 'Remember Respond Resist' exhibition includes the first-ever UK showing of Honorata Martin's 2013 film 'About Going Out into Poland'. Discover more about this exciting and award-winning Polish-based artist.

Martin was born in 1984 and works in Gdańsk, Poland.

She is a co-founder and vice-president of the Arbuz Association in Gdańsk – an organisation that works with marginalised young people through music and film workshops – as well as an activist and social worker.

She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk.

She won the ‘Best Newcomer’ category and was nominated for the main prize at the 2015 Splendor Gedanensis Award - Gdańsk's most prestigious cultural award, which is granted annually for outstanding artistic accomplishments and for promoting the city's cultural identity in Poland and abroad.

In 2016 she was nominated for Polityka’s Passport Award – an annual Polish cultural award which has been presented by the magazine Polityka since 1993 for outstanding achievement in the arts.

In 2017 she won the Spojrzenia - Deutsche Bank Award – a prestigious prize for young Polish artists.

Martin has a varied art practice and works across painting, installation, performance and video. Her work often unfolds in real time and involves her engaging directly with the environment and audience.

Her work also often involves pushing the limits of the body and confronting social taboos.

Make yourself at home (2015) involved a live performance during which Martin camped in the Sculpture Park in the Bródno area of Warsaw. She has also undertaken performances and installations that involve being sat in a baby stroller, on a rooftop, with long silences and in freezing cold temperatures.

Going Out into Poland (2013), one of her most well-known works, saw her undertake a solitary two-month journey across the country, relying on strangers and passersby for shelter and assistance along the way. The experience was then realised as an exhibition at the Wroclaw BWA gallery. About Going Out into Poland – the film that Martin created to document and recall her experiences can be seen in the Media Lab at The Box until the end of Sunday 11 January 2026 as part of our Remember Respond Resist exhibition.
