Through Their Eyes: Two Students Share Their Favourite Finds at The Box

What catches your eye when you visit The Box? During this year's work placement programme, two local students joined our Marketing team and set out to answer that question. After exploring our galleries and exhibitions, they selected their favourite objects on display, photographed them, and wrote about why they stood out. Read their picks and discover The Box through fresh eyes.

For my Year 12 work experience, I signed up to do it at The Box Plymouth. I got to experience two days as if I was a volunteer and got some great experience out of it. As I wandered around, I found some parts that were particularly interesting. Here they are:

  1. The arachnids and entomology (insect) display - Mammoth Gallery. I found this interesting as it puts the spider's true size compared to insects like beetles. PS: I named the tarantula Gregory.
  2. The Roman coin display - Port of Plymouth Gallery. I liked this because it shows aspects of a time period I find interesting.
  3. A Dockyard clocking in machine - Port of Plymouth Gallery. I found this interesting because it shows that even though technology wasn't as advanced, people used something to clock in to work.
  4. The mummy - 100 Journeys Gallery. I found this interesting because it shows the size of an Egyptian mummy coffin and also I really like the Ancient Egyptian history.
  5. The Jurassic fossil and the ammonite - Mammoth Gallery. I found this interesting as I found the process of fossilisation interesting and to see and outcome of this amazed me.

Grace

Things I found interesting whilst at my work experience at The Box Plymouth:

  1. Seagull (Margaret/Maggie) - Mammoth Gallery. Protecting over the skeletons and fossils in the exhibit. Very proud of her job. Very life like. 10/10
  2. Charles Darwin and beetles - 100 Journeys Gallery. Very intriguing to see his belongings and gives an insight into what he was thinking. The different species of beetle are also very interesting and beautiful for their unique patterns. 9/10
  3. Butterflies - Mammoth Gallery. Very fun to see all the different species of butterflies that I wouldn't normally see around. The paper butterflies on the ceiling were very detailed and added bright colour to the room. 10/10
  4. Sabretooth skeleton - Mammoth Gallery. Shows people how the animal could have looked at the time and also different parts of the animal. It was really interesting to see and seemed like a very intimidating animal. 9/10
  5. Book and microscope - Mammoth Gallery. Very cool. Gave an insight to people's thoughts and studies and advancements at the time. 8/10.
