Emerging photography commission winners revealed

We're delighted to announce the winners of the Emerging Photographers Commission for our forthcoming exhibition 'The Way We Live'. In our recent call-out we were seeking three emerging photographers or photography-based artists to create small-scale commissions that explore the meaning of 'home' and which will be shown at The Box from October 2026-February 2027 as part of our Autumn/Winter season.
A panel consisting of curator Beth Hughes, photographer Hannah Starkey, curator Hannah Hooks and senior engagement and learning officer Adam Milford selected photographers Abril Sigle, Flora Tye and Josh Huxham from a long list of applicants.
Abril Sigle
Abril is a UK-based documentary photographer who grew up between Argentina, Spain, and the UK. Shooting medium format, 35mm, and digital, her project Parallel documents housing precarity, from endless renting to privatised council flats, capturing home as a deeply transitional space.
Flora Tye
Flora is an emerging photographer exploring the relationships between people, place and material culture. Informed by visual anthropology and inspired by the way analogue processes encourage slow, attentive looking, her practice explores overlooked spaces, everyday gestures and material traces through which belonging and histories become visible.
Josh Huxham
Josh is a photographic artist based in Plymouth. His work explores grief, trauma, memory, and the fragile tension between what is remembered and what is lost. Working with photography and archival material, he approaches the archive as both evidence and wound, where absence becomes visible and the past remains active within the present.
Our judging panel were really impressed with the vision and unique perspectives of all three artists. We can’t wait to support their work and share the exciting projects that will develop with them over the coming months.
The Way We Live will run from 24 October 2026 to 21 February 2027. Through a series of contemporary art responses and archival collections this ambitious exhibition will consider the implications of planner Patrick Abercrombie and Plymouth City Engineer and Surveyor James Paton Watson’s 'A Plan for Plymouth' (1943) which outlined ideas for the rebuilding of the city after The Blitz, and Jill Craigie's film The Way We Live (1946) which shows family life in post-war Plymouth.
