Twixmas at The Box
20 December 2025
Schools out and many of us are now in holiday mode or dealing with last-minute festive preparations, but if you're thinking about what to do with your family, friends and time off over the next few days or during 'Twixmas' - that strange stretch between Christmas and New Year that seems to have a rhythm all of its own - we hope this handy checklist will help!
1. Festive opening hours
Here are our opening hours from now until 2 January when we'll be open again as normal. The Box is closed on 25 and 26 December and 1 January. Don't forget we're free with no need to book!
● Sunday 21 December: 10am-5pm
● Tuesday 23 December: 10am-5pm
● Wednesday 24 December: 10am-3pm
● Saturday 27 December: 10am-5pm
● Sunday 28 December: 10am-5pm
● Tuesday 30 December: 10am-5pm
● Wednesday 31 December: 10am-3pm
2. The Box Kitchen & Bar and Shop
If you're looking for somewhere to relax and enjoy a coffee, brunch or lunch our Kitchen & Bar is open on the same dates as The Box with its tasty menu, daily specials, delicious cakes and unique setting underneath the Royal Naval ship's figureheads. There's no need to book in advance - tables are on a first come and served basis. All you need to do is decide what you'd like to eat and drink and then order at the bar. Simple! If you're looking for some last-minute gift inspiration before 25 December, or you've got some Christmas money to spend afterwards, our shop is packed with great products - many of which are by local makers.
3. Don't miss Remember Respond Resist
Are you looking for a great art exhibition to immerse yourself in over the break? The good news is that Remember Respond Resist is still on display (until 11 January). See works from the British Council Collection by 21 international artists such as Henry Kenneth Armitage, Hew Locke, Angus Boulton and David Thorpe, including sculpture, taxidermy, painting, collage and drawing. Watch a film work by Polish artist Honorata Martin that explores a journey she made across her home country on foot. Get insights into the social and political worlds of the UK and Poland through the work of Royal Academicians Grayson Perry and Goshka Macuga. See highlights from the archives at The Box that explore the historical and cultural ties between Plymouth and Poland.
4. Beryl Cook: Peep Show
Enjoy a little taster of what's to come with our display in the Active Archives gallery on the first floor (until 11 January). Peep Show is a precursor to our major Beryl Cook: Pride and Joy exhibition (opening on 24 January) and includes items from The Box's archives and the Cook family archives.
5. Family events
There's always so much on offer for children and families at this time of the year - and The Box is no exception. If you're looking for something to keep them entertained on Christmas Eve, we have fun performances of 'Naughty or Nice?' by The Candlelight Theatre Company taking place from 10am and 1pm. On 30 and 31 December and 2 January we'll be decorating biodegradable plant pots with paints, ribbons and gold bells to create 'Jingle Pots' from 10.30am-12.30pm and 1.30-3.30pm (last entries at 12.15pm and 3.15pm). Then, on New Year's Eve, we're hosting a special 'Family Party'. You'll be in for a treat with an early countdown to midnight, dancing, face painting and a party tea for all the children who come along. Our free 'Tell Me a Story' session will also be running from 10.30-11am on 2 January. So much to choose from!
With all this on offer it's a perfect time to visit The Box! We wish you a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year.
