Celebrating Dingles (1976)

Watch the film to see footage of Plymouth’s first department store, originally opened in 1935.

Affectionately known as Dingles, this department store was in Patrick Abercrombie and J. Paton Watson’s plan for the rebuilding of Plymouth of 1943. The new building opened on 1 September 1951 and marked the first reopening of a department store in the UK since 1938.
