Bitesize: Unpacking 'Napoleon on the Bellerophon'

22 May 2024 - 22 May 2024

Listen as Art Curator, Terah Walkup explores Jules Girardet's much-loved painting of Napoleon in Plymouth Sound in August 1815, following his defeat at the Battle of Waterloo. Although Girardet's imaginative reconstruction was painted in 1890, seventy-five years after the events took place, it reflects contemporary accounts in several respects, especially the number of people afloat in the bay as the fallen French Emperor parades on deck.
