We're celebrating our 'Forbidden Territories: 100 Years of Surreal Landscapes' with a special day of activities on Saturday 16 August! Join us during our 'Summer of Surrealism' for a dreamy day of surreal fun, as we explore the exhibition through creative workshops and tours for all ages. See our full programme below.

Plymouth Laureate of Words Rosemarie Corlett will be offering a surrealism writing workshop. Artist Aliyah Hussian, whose work is featured in Forbidden Territories will be offering workshops for families and adults. Join a family tour that explores the exhibition in a different way, or take a tour with expert Judith Noble who'll be looking at surrealism’s links with spirituality.

The Box Kitchen & Bar will be offering a special for the day: a surreal soup. ‘Midnight in Bloom’, a colour changing pea flower broth with lemongrass, coconut and rice noodles is definitely worth a try and served with a citrus elixir (blended drink).

10.30am-12.30pm: Family Fun: Lively Leaves Clay Workshop with Aliyah Hussain

Simmons Learning Room
Come and create your own clay leaf using press moulds made by Aliyah from real foraged plants and imaginary botanical creations. You can press, paint and then take away what you make to put on display at home! Last entries at 12.15pm.

10.30am-12.30pm: Exploring Surrealism: Creative Writing Workshop with Dr Rosemarie Corlett

Foulston Room, First Floor
Join Dr. Rosemarie Corlett, Plymouth's Laureate of Words, for an immersive creative writing workshop exploring the world of surrealism.
£15 per person. 18+

1-2pm: ‘In her dream a forest grew…’: a Forbidden Territories Tour with Judith Noble

Meet in North Hall by the sculpture
Join artist and researcher Judith Noble for a special tour of the Forbidden Territories: 100 years of Surreal Landscapes exhibition as she explores the inner landscapes of Surrealism and its relationship with the occult, gender and spirituality. After the talk there will be a chance to chat informally with Judith and look at special surrealist tarot decks.

2.30-3pm: Creative Creatures: Family Tour of Forbidden Territories

Forbidden Territories: 100 Years of Surreal Landscapes
Join us for a free family tour of Forbidden Territories: 100 Years of Surreal Landscapes. We'll be exploring the weird, fun and fantastic creatures that appear in the paintings and sculptures throughout the exhibition. This tour is for all ages.

2.30-4.30pm: Surreal Seed Pods: Adult Clay Workshop with Aliyah Hussain

Simmons Learning Room
Come and join artist Aliyah Hussain to make your own surreal seed pod with air dry clay. Using a range of techniques such as pinching, coiling and press moulds Aliyah will guide you through the creative process, sharing insights into her artistic practice and the surrealist themes behind her work.
