We're shining a light on volunteering with a special programme of activity on Saturday 7 June! Join us as we celebrate our volunteer’s contributions and get a flavour of the volunteering opportunities we have at The Box as we mark Volunteers' Week 2025.

10am-12pm: Parish Registers Taster Session

Cottonian Research Room, First Floor
See how the hundreds of Parish Registers we hold are indexed to help family historians find their ancestors. Book a short taster session and help create entries for our database. No two people have the same handwriting and some of the entries can be more challenging to read than others! Help us add to the 1.5 million entries that have already been created. Last entries at 11.30am. Free. Book on the day.

10am-3pm: Window Portraits

Explore More Area, Ground Floor
Take part in our volunteer-led family-friendly craft activity and create colourful window portraits inspired by the Jyll Bradley: Running and Returning exhibition. Last entries at 2.30pm. Free. No need to book.

10am-3pm: Try ‘Visiteering’

Tavistock Place
Join volunteers from Saltram House for some fun bite-sized volunteering activities that can really make a difference. All ages welcome. Get involved and start earning your Junior Urban Ranger badge! Activities include making wildflower seedballs, a quick and impactful litter pick and an exciting urban spotter challenge – there's something for everyone. Free. No need to book.

10.30am-1pm: Pop Up Book Workshop with Fran Copeman (16+)

Simmons Learning Room
Enjoy a workshop hosted by artist Fran Copeman, where you'll make the first section of a pop-up book using both your own images and images from The Box’s archive. You can then complete the book after the workshop. This event is aimed at those who may already have an established art background and who can use it as an opportunity for continuous professional development. Free. Donations welcome. Please book in advance.

11am and 2pm: Exhibition Tours

Jyll Bradley: Running and Returning, St Luke’s
Join a volunteer-led plain-speaking tour of the Jyll Bradley: Running and Returning exhibition to discover more about some of the amazing works on display. Meet by the Welcome Desk at 10.55am and 1.55pm. Free. No need to book.

11am, 12pm, 2pm and 3pm: Natural History Store Tours

Behind the Scenes
Take a 30-minute behind the scenes tour of the natural history store with our curator and volunteers to discover more about our collections and how we care for them. Meet by the Welcome Desk at 10.55am, 11.55am, 1.55pm and 2.55pm. Free. Donations welcome. Please book in advance.

2-4.30pm: Pop Up Book Workshop with Fran Copeman (All Ages)

As part of our June ‘Super Saturday’, come and enjoy a workshop hosted by artist Fran Copeman, where you'll make the first section of a pop-up book using both your own images and images from The Box’s archive. You can then complete the book after the workshop. This event is aimed at all ages including children who must be accompanied by an adult. Everyone is welcome and all and materials will be provided. Free. Donations welcome. Please book in advance.

Throughout the day

• Find volunteers in various locations around The Box delivering pop-up talks about our exhibitions and their favourite objects, sharing their experience of volunteering or snapping, recording and creating content for our social media channels.

• Get involved in 'Rolling Together' - a special event led by Take a Part and Plymouth's skating community. See the Drift Tricks 'skateable sculptures' in Tavistock Place and find out about future volunteering opportunities for the ‘Civic Space’ initiative which is highlighting skating's rich contribution to the city's cultural scene and help shape the future of skateboarding in Plymouth.
