Plymouth Porcelain: A New Collection by Clare Twomey
Inspired by the 'Breaking the Mould: Sculpture by Women since 1945' exhibition, we're shining a light on some of the female sculptors and artists in The Box's collections. ‘Plymouth Porcelain: A New Collection’ was originally unveiled on the former Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery’s balcony in 2012 and was created by leading ceramic artist, Clare Twomey.

Xixho by Zadie Xa
Our 2022 exhibition by artist Zadie Xa used historic items from our world cultures collection as a starting point for new work. Plymouth’s first-ever dedicated fashion exhibition highlights centuries of stories
An exhibition, now on display at The Box, is paying homage to the city’s fashion past and future. ‘Dress Code – Fashion Stories from The Box’ (until 4 September) features garments that date back to the 1700s and accessories that date back to the 1500s, and explores contemporary conversations about identity, sustainability, shopping, design, making and craft.

Falklands 40: Thanksgiving Service Photo
40 years ago, on 2 April 1982, Argentinian forces invaded the Falkland Islands. Located in the South Atlantic, the islands are just 300 miles from the Argentinian mainland where they are known as the ‘Islas Malvinas’. They’d been a source of dispute between Britain and Argentina since the British first settled there in 1833.

Unpacking the themes in ‘Breaking the Mould’
‘Breaking the Mould: Sculpture by Women since 1945’ has just opened and will be on display in St Luke’s at The Box and The Levinsky Gallery at the University of Plymouth until 5 June. The exhibition is divided into three themes, and you can discover more about them here.

Ernest Shackleton
Ernest Henry Shackleton is widely known as one of the most inspirational leaders of the twentieth century and a key figure in the ‘Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration’ alongside Roald Amundsen and Plymouth-born Robert Falcon Scott. The recent discovery of the Endurance, his ship that sank to the bottom of the Weddell Sea over a century ago, has amazed people around the world. Learn more about his story here.

Seth Lakeman - live at The Box
In a building in which the scribes of history and mark makers in art vie with each other for space, and the current 'Seven Sisters' exhibition features some of the most distinct and ancient mark making on the planet, it was wonderful to hear another collector of stories add his voice to the many who have made this city of storytellers and adventurers what it is.
